navigating by the stars - may 5 - 6
Registration for this workshop will open soon!
This practicum is a concise two-day course in the theory and practice of basic celestial navigation. Participants will learn basic principles, timekeeping, almanac usage, sight reduction methods and plotting, and training and observation with a marine sextant. Alternative use of a scientific hand calculator will be discussed, and a PC-based programmed calculator emulator offered.
At the conclusion, participants will be able to take, reduce and plot positions from celestial sights of the sun – our closest star - and possibly other stars, the moon and planets, if time and interest permit.
No special math skills are required—only addition and subtraction, and table look-ups. All materials will be provided, just bring your interest and enthusiasm and be ready to have fun!
