A blend of traditional and modern, The Sailmaker’s House is an independent, boutique inn located in the center of beautiful downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire. We are a convenient jumping off point for our guests to discover the city and enjoy all that the Seacoast has to offer.
HUMBLE BEGINNINGS & HOSPITALITY
The land on which The Sailmaker's House sits was purchased from Thomas Pierce in 1822 by John Holbrook. As a sailmaker, John conducted business at his waterfront shop downtown, pictured above. Upon his death in 1883, John left the house to his wife Sarah, who sold the property in 1902. Throughout the 1900’s the land switched hands multiple times and became an inn in the early 1980’s. The Sailmaker’s House was established in 2017 and is proud to continue in the tradition of the last 30 years. We have preserved the historic feel of the building while adding our own modern twist.
